THE EDGE SUMATRA Toro

THE EDGE SUMATRA

Toro

Source: Cigar Aficionado
Rocky Patel has become a star in the cigar business thanks to his never-ending drive to meet cigar smokers and his creation of bold, fair-priced blends. His biggest hit has been The Edge, which began as an unadorned chest of 100 cigars packed without bands. The package did, however, have a label that warned of the strength of the cigars inside. The Edge begat several other versions from Patel, and the latest (released this past fall) is The Edge Sumatra Toro. The 6-inch x 52-ring smoke is strong and spicy, with wood and ground pepper notes. It’s powered by Nicaraguan filler and an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper, and made under contract for Patel at the El Paraiso factory owned by the Plasencia family. At just over $5, it’s a true bargain.

C.A.O. LX2 Gordo

C.A.O. LX2

Gordo

The CAO Lx2 Cigars are the third and final installment of the CAO x2 trilogy. This ligero-heavy powerhouse posseses a full bodied flavor profile and was inspired by tobacco grown on the 140-acre Pueblo Nuevo farm located just outside of Condega, Nicaragua. CAO Lx2 features a sun grown Nicaraguan wrapper, Honduran binder and 3 different Ligero fillers from Nicarragua and the Dominican Republic. CAO Lx2 boasts a bold, muscular structure but also shows flavors of bittersweet chocolate, paprika, and woody tobacco notes that fan out superbly on the palate. A dark, oily log of a cigar with an uneven burn but fairly consistent draw. It's spicy and cedary with some nuts and licorice.

CAMACHO COROJO Churchill

CAMACHO COROJO

Churchill

Corojo seed makes superb tobacco, but it’s a fickle leaf. Because it is vulnerable to disease and yields fewer leaves per acre than newer hybrids, growing Corojo is far from easy. But in 2007 the crop in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras was superb, and today that Corojo leaf wrapper is being used to roll Camacho Corojo cigars. Camacho is a Miami company (now a subsidiary of Davidoff of Geneva) that earned some of its highest ratings ever from Cigar Aficionado this year, and this No. 5 ranking of the Camacho Corojo Churchill represents Camacho’s highest finish ever in our Top 25. There’s a lot to like about this cigar—it’s a big, hefty smoke, medium to full bodied, and loaded with rich, leathery flavors and notes of earth and dark fruit. At less than $7, it’s also a bargain, one of the best buys on our list. While the term Corojo is used quite liberally throughout the industry, it specifically refers to a seed variety created by the Rodriguez family on a tobacco plantation in Pinar del Río, Cuba, known as El Corojo. The wrapper leaves grown from the seed developed by the Rodriguez clan had flavor and color unlike anything else. Cuba no longer grows Corojo-seed tobacco, but Julio Eiroa, patriarch of the Eiroa family, former owners of Camacho, still grows tobacco from Corojo seed on his farm in the fertile Jamastran Valley of Honduras.

ILLUSIONE EPERNAY Le Matin

ILLUSIONE EPERNAY

Le Matin

Dion Giolito is a new breed of cigarmaker, a passionate cigar retailer from Reno, Nevada, who decided to make his own cigar brand. Inspired by the pre-Sandinista Joya de Nicaraguas that he had smoked, he struck out to recapture that classic Nicaraguan taste. Giolito is proud to call himself picky, claiming to test-smoke each batch of tobacco before it’s made into his cigars, and rejecting any that don’t meet his expectations. We were enamored with his Illusiones right from the start. In August 2007, we conducted a brand tasting of the original nine sizes in Cigar Insider—all but one scored 90 points or more, and the cg:4 was named our No. 7 cigar of 2007. Illusiones have done well in our ratings ever since, and this is the second year in a row that one of Giolito’s Illusione Epernay cigars has appeared in the Top 25. Epernay is named for a town in France that is built upon chalk rock in the heart of the Champagne region, and the line is meant to be lighter and sweeter than the original Illusiones. (It has no ligero in the blend.) The Le Matin is the newest size in this line, released in 2010, and we found it balanced, creamy and medium bodied. When Illusione first appeared in our Top 25 in 2007, we wrote: “Consistency is the tough trick to the cigar business, so the real test is ahead for Giolito—maintaining the impeccable quality of these cigars so they live up to the early ratings.” He certainly has.

PUNCH GRAND CRU No. 2 Maduro

PUNCH GRAND CRU

No. 2 Maduro

Punch is one of the great names in cigars. Originating in Cuba, it has also had a non-Cuban version for many years. The Honduran Punch has long been a mainstay of cigar smokers seeking some power in their cigars, but the Grand Cru version—created in 1994 by Frank Llaneza, one of the true legends of Central American cigarmaking—was made to be more easygoing. We’ve long enjoyed the Punch Grand Cru No. 2 Maduro, which is quite simply one of the best-looking figurados made in Honduras. This silky and box-pressed torpedo has coffee bean, cocoa and sweet wood on the palate, with a pleasant floral finish.

A. TURRENT TRIPLE PLAY Belicoso

A. TURRENT TRIPLE PLAY

Belicoso

The Turrent family of Mexico has long made cigars in the San Andrés Valley, typically using its homegrown tobaccos. Recently the company has expanded its portfolio, exporting its tobacco leaves, working with blenders from other factories and creating new cigars made from a variety of types of tobaccos. The A. Turrent Triple Play Belicoso is made with a combination of maduro tobaccos from Mexico, Honduras and Connecticut, and the resulting mix (which involves blending several vintages) is sublime. The Triple Play Belicoso smacks of espresso bean and cedar, and is one of the best cigars to bear the Turrent name that we have ever smoked.

ALEC BRADLEY PRENSADO Gran Toro

ALEC BRADLEY PRENSADO

Gran Toro

The Alec Bradley Prensado was created around the Corojo dos mil seis wrapper. Grown in late 2006 on the farm in Trojes, Honduras, then fermented and aged through mid 2008. Alec Bradley research the perfect blend for over six months. The Prensado possesses natural sweetness, strength and complexity. The Prensado is AB's first traditional pressed line of cigars that is full bodied with a gorgeous reddish brown cubanesque look. A richly colored cigar with superb construction. The first puffs are sweet and leathery, then turn toasty and nutty with a chocolate note. Sophisticated.
