We began with a list of our top-scoring cigars culled from blind tastings conducted in the magazine and in Cigar Insider. We started the contest with 60 smokes that had scored at least 90 points in one of our taste tests.

DAVIDOFF CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD (1989)

What a treat! This small cigar has a compact but smooth draw with hints of chestnuts and cinnamon on the palate, and then a core of earthy, wood chip flavors. It was impossible to put down.

La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel

Litto Gomez is a creative cigarmaker, and perhaps his greatest innovation is coming up with the Chisel shape in 2003. The flattened figurado has a head that looks like a handtool or the mouthpiece of a woodwind instrument. Its latest incarnation—fall of 2010—is our No. 10 cigar of 2010, the La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel.

Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has been making cigars for a long time. He learned his craft from his father, working in Little Havana at their tiny factory called El Credito Cigars, the birthplace of the non-Cuban La Gloria Cubana. That smoke became one of the first true hits of the cigar boom, and grew into something far larger.

JOYA DE NICARAGUA ANTAÑO 1970 GRAN RESERVA

The 2002 release of the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño line energized the slumbering Joya de Nicaragua brand. The success of that moderately priced cigar led its makers to set aside some of the component tobaccos for extra aging, resulting in this special release. The filler is aged for five years and the wrappers are the most select from the Nicaraguan criollo seed used to wrap the line. The 5 1/2 by 52 Robusto Grande is woody and earthy, with a long finish smacking of spice, leather and wood.

The Joya de Nicaragua brand was practically dead when brand owner Alejandro Martinez-Cuenca turned back the clock and released a cigar that tasted like the strong Joyas of the 1970s. The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño was a huge hit, but the ligero-loaded cigar was too strong for many smokers. The company turned to Manuel Quesada of the Dominican Republic to tame the blend. The result is the Celebracion line, which is robust but more balanced and elegant than the Antaño. If the Antaño is a bull, Celebracion is a stallion. The wrappers are grown from criollo seed, and the 6 7/8-inch, 48-ring gauge Churchill is a bargain, selling for only $4.50. Production of the Churchill, which debuted in mid-2004, should rise to about 50,000 cigars in 2005.
